It’s our second day in Mary River and we took it upon ourselves to test the new Subaru Outback on Hardie’s 4WD track and go 4WD in Mary River National Park. The track takes you through floodplains and the heart of the Mary River catchment as well as an inland delta and a working cattle station.
4WD in Mary River National Park
There is nothing quite like the feeling of being in the outback, under a huge sky and burning sun, having a great adventure. The track took us through creek crossings, some dry, some very wet, past termite mounds easily double our height, and past billabongs that shimmered in the sun with lush green lily pads and vegetation. Turn one bend, and you are faced with dozens of wallabies crossing the fields. Turn another, and see a flock of magpie geese take off toward the horizon.
Needless to say, the day was full of squeals and thrills as the cars made it up and over another crossing, and across another rocky hill. Fantastic for those adrenaline junkies out there!
It was easily a full day trip, and very thirsty work. S,o a beer to celebrate at the end of the day, as the sun set and lit up the Northern Territory sky, was a lovely reward.
