I remember this moment like it was yesterday. I was at the tail end of an incredible 6-month overland journey from Mexico to Patagonia with three of my closest friends; my inhibitions had fallen to the wayside and I was prepared to give just about anything a go.
But what was so special was that I had my parents with me. They were both in Argentina at the time and decided to join us for our adventure in Patagonia, a trek across the Perito Moreno Glacier.
My father and I were like children on a school excursion that day, overwhelmed no matter where we looked.
Thirty kilometres in length, five kilometres wide and seventy-four meters high (from the surface of Lake Argentino) the Perito Moreno Glacier is one of only three in Patagonia which is continuing to grow. Arguably one of the regions most important tourist attractions, day trips out to the glacier kick off early with a two-hour bus ride from the neighbouring town El Calafate.
On arrival we sat and viewed the glacier in all its might, from a purpose built viewing platform nearby, before being led (by a locally based tour company) on a walking circuit toward the southern flank and east facing edge of the glacier.
Two words – sensory overload.
The trek was a lifelong dream for both Dad and I, so the opportunity to share it together is something I will have with me long into the future…
This photograph and quote is a reminder to us all – that age really has no barrier and the desire for adventure can be found within us all.
