Ahhhhhhhhhh steam engines, living, breathing iron horses. From the time I was born in the late 40’s I was around steam engines and railway rolling stock. My father was a Station Master in a small country town and my eldest brother joined the railways as a cleaner, eventually becoming a fireman (stoker). Thankfully steam engines continued to operate until my early teens and when I was about 8 years old my family moved to a bigger town and my father took on the role of Guard with the Silverton Tramway Company, a privately owned railway which operated between Broken Hill in New South Wales and Cockburn in South Australia. Weekends and school holidays I had the pleasure of being able to ride in the brakevan with dad and if I was really lucky, I got to ride up in the cab of the engine. Those days they used to run W class Beyer Peacock locomotives, the jolly green giants ( to a small kid anyway). Before we moved back to Broken Hill, if I wasn’t at school I would be down with dad at the office as soon as the train came in, having a cup of tea with the crew while they chatted about the train they had just brought in and what the consignment was for the return journey. They definitely were glory days. Steam trains are purely magical. I would give my eye teeth to tour Scotland on one of these gentle giants.
