Top 5 Destinations for Camping in Victoria

Angela Armstrong | March 11, 2014 | 9:31 pm | Comment

Whether it’s your first or your 50th time camping in Victoria, these scenic camping spots around the region are sure to make your trip worthwhile.

1. Nagambie Lakes Leisure Park

Nagambie Lakes Leisure Park is the perfect weekend getaway, just under two hours drive from Melbourne. In the heart of the Victorian wine region, campsites are well manicured and bordered by the recreational Lake Nagambie and Goulburn River. Facilities are plentiful and campground activities perfect for families.

2. The Great Ocean Road

To experience this popular tourist destination at its best, choose a time outside the peak summer periods. There are plenty of exceptional campgrounds along any stretch of the drive. Our favourites include Wye River Tourist Park for its great family facilities, clean amenities and proximity to the beach; and Cumberland River Holiday Park for its semi-wild camping experience next to a running stream and towering cliff faces.

3. Bright

An attractive Alpine region hideaway for gourmet first-timers. Campgrounds are in town and close to a range of quality restaurants and cafes. Bright is the ideal launching point for nearby mountain resorts – Mount Buffalo, Falls Creek or Hotham, all less than one hours drive away.

4. Mallacoota

Camping sites look over the Mallacoota Inlet and Croajingalong ranges and offer the chance for absolute water frontage. The toilet and shower blocks might be basic but there’s nothing basic about your surrounds. Where else can you drop in a line from the comfort of your camp chair. Town necessities including a supermarket, newsagent, cafes and restaurants are just a few minutes walk away.

5. Wilsons Promontory National Park

This is a first-timers best introduction to wild camping in a National Park. You’ll still have access to toilet and shower amenities with the wonders of sweeping beaches, granite mountain ranges and open forests surrounding you.
