There is nothing like heading to the snow if you are feeling like a little family adventure filled with laughter and good times! We packed up the Forester and headed to one of the biggest ski resorts in the Southern Hemisphere, Perisher in southwestern New South Wales, for some good old-fashioned Alpine adventures.
Alpine Adventures in Perisher, New South Wales
It was the perfect day for a drive. The sun was shining as we rolled over the undulating hills filled with plenty of grass and happy cows. Passing Lake Jindabyne, we stopped for a little lunch and to throw the chains in the back. With a warm latte for Clint and me, and a chocolate milkshake for our three-year-old daughter Charli, we could tell this would be one of those trips that childhood memories are made of.
As we wound our way up the mountain, we finally reached the snowline, and Charli is screaming with excitement in the back seat. Of course, like most families with a young child, we are lured to the side of the road to stop, get out and throw a little snow!
Hitting the Slopes!
Arriving a Perisher we checked into the Perisher Valley Hotel. We threw on our layers of clothing, clicked on our skis, and before we knew it, we were all standing in the “Milo kids section” with our daughter snow-ploughing within minutes. Using her hands to gain momentum, her smile was as big as her face.
Our dear friends Dave and Tiffany, who were along to help out with the filming of our TV show, took Charli off for a little rest while Clint, David (our cameraman) and I hit the slopes. Brilliant blue sky, sunshine, white powder and a whole lot of fun! We took off to a place called “Happy Valley” and met up with Perisher instructor Barney for a ski. His passion for the mountain was infectious and his love of life was inspiring.
Clint took on his first black diamond run, and I slid down trying to look like I knew what I was doing. But it was our friend Dave who was the real star. The former ski instructor was taking on the jumps that were set up for the night ski slope series!
We bumped into Olympians in training, skiers who’ve been coming to the mountain all their lives, and those that were here for one of their first Alpine adventures ever. Everyone here has one thing in common: that glow on his or her face that shows that adrenaline is flowing through their veins. We’re all feeling very alive.
Packing the car and going away for some Alpine adventures on the slopes for a few days is the tonic that so many of us need to keep the sparkle in our lives. It just takes a little effort and planning… but once you are on road and enjoying the drive, you’re away!
