10 Family friendly things to do in and around Perth

Tom Carr | January 11, 2016 | 7:03 am | 1 Comment

Perth is easily accessible these days thanks to budget airlines creating a little friendly competition and lower prices.

I remember the days of paying upward of $800 for a return flight from Melbourne – gosh, how times have changed…

And I’m thankful they have – as it not only makes it easier to see family but it’s also a little more encouraging for people who live on the east coast of Australia to head that way for holidays! Which is fantastic as Perth is such a beautiful city with so much to offer.

So here’s a little list of a few old (family-friendly) favourites…

  1. Adventure World

A theme park located in Bibra Lake, 20 km from the CBD – Adventure World is jam packed with plenty of fun stuff to keep the kids entertained for hours! The park undergoes a winter closure each year however by the time summer rolls around, the place is alive with smiling faces.

  1. A picnic at Kings Park

Picnic with a view at Kings Park

Gosh I adore this place. Located on the western edge of the CBD, this 1000-acre park boasts panoramic views of both the Swan River and Perth City Skyline, so you can imagine how beautiful it is at night. Pack a picnic, head down and lay beneath the trees as the kids play in the expansive grounds surrounding.

  1. Hire a bike and cycle Rottnest Island

Cycle gorgeous Rottnest Island

Pack lunch, jump aboard the Rottnest Express and hire bicycles on arrival. The kids will love spotting the islands native resident – the Quokka!

  1. Afternoon tea at Indiana, Cottesloe

The Indiana Tea House

“The Indiana Tea House” holds very special memories for me. Growing up we would travel to Perth every year to see my Mothers family, and whenever we were there we would go to the Indiana for afternoon tea – it was our special treat.

The building is located right on the beach and has the most spectacular views – I remember feeling so special, all dressed up alongside my sister as we ordered our cakes and milkshakes (we were too young for coffee and vino).

So if you want to take the kids somewhere a little nice – this is the perfect place!

  1. The Margaret River Chocolate Factory, Swan Valley

Chocolate fondue

Only 20 minutes from Perth’s CBD – the Swan Valley factory serves the most divine chocolate fondue, as well as a myriad of other sweet treats. Sister company ‘Margaret River Providore’ is located on site and boasts a huge range of preserves, chutneys, wines and olive oils – not to be missed.

  1. Aquarium of Western Australia, Hilary’s Boat Harbour

Home to Australia’s largest single aquarium and walk-through underwater tunnel – AQWA houses more than 400 species of marine life and boasts one of the worlds largest living coral reef exhibits.

  1. Clancy’s Fish Pub, Fremantle

We would go here every weekend; order a few cones of fish and chips and listen to live music! The pub backs onto a small park that was perfect for us kids to muck around in…

  1. Perth Zoo

Five minutes from the heart of the city, the Perth Zoo is iconic! And is home to over 1,200 animals from around the world. A day well spent!

  1. Scitech

Educational and engaging – the centre offers interactive experiences for the entire family. Think ‘hands-on’ science exhibits; a huge planetarium and mind blowing science performances! This joint makes science cool!

  1. Fremantle Beach

Perth is home to some of our country’s most breathtaking beaches! Fremantle, Cottesloe, Scarborough, and City beach – the list is endless…

I was lucky enough explore regional Victoria earli I was lucky enough explore regional Victoria earlier in the year (between lockdowns!), and tour the Goldfields with @big4holidayparks – Sure, I got my much-needed fix of the outdoors and was able to feed my insatiable curiosity as I explored the regions utterly fascinating history & culture, but it was sitting up at the old bar of family run Munari wines, just outside of Heathcote that got me.
.
Chatting to the chief winemaker Adrian Munari, and his daughter India (over a lovely red, of course) I heard all about the historic sheep station that was established in 1871, and life on the property today. (I wonder how the farmers endured the pandemic in 1919?)

Here’s to a happy summer holiday for us all, of enjoying those ‘moments’, wherever we are.
