10 of the world’s most expensive eats

Tom Carr | October 1, 2015 | 4:13 am | 1 Comment

Black chicken roasted with gold leaf, infused with Dom Perignon and scattered with digested coffee beans and Italian truffle anyone? It’s probably a thing.

Well, this list below actually exists so if you have a hankering to empty your wallet (and credit card) in one meal while you are on your travels, here is your ultimate guide!

  1. Kopi Luwak

What even is that?

Kopi, the Indonesian word for “coffee”

Luwak, the local name for the Asian Palm Civet

The Asian Palm Civet (a small cat-like animal) digests the coffee cherry before expelling the bean, which farmers collect, wash and roast. Later it’s made into, apparently, the world’s greatest coffee. It’s thought that the natural fermentation process, which occurs within the creature’s stomach, enhances the flavour of the bean.

Ok, where do I find it?

Sumatra, Indonesia, is the world’s largest producer of Kopi Luwak

What makes it one of the world’s most expensive eats?

A take home bag will cost upward of $700 US per kilogram, whilst a cup of freshly brewed Kopi Luwak will set you back between $35 to $80 US.

  1. The Quintessential Grilled Cheese

What even is that?

The world’s most luxurious sandwich starts off with French Pullman bread that has been infused with Dom Perignon champagne and 24 karat gold flakes.

The bread is then buttered with a white truffle spread and layered with Caciocavallo Podolico (a rare Italian cheese made from the milk of free-range cows who live on a diet of fennel grass and wild strawberries).

Once grilled to perfection, the edges of the sandwich are rolled in edible gold leaf and served alongside lobster bisque with truffle oil and champagne.

Serendipity 3, a restaurant in New York City

What makes it one of the world’s most expensive eats?

It will set you back a reasonable $214 US

*The restaurant requires all orders 48 hours in advance

  1. Frrrozen Haute Chocolate

What even is that?

A selection of the world’s finest cocoas, frozen milk and whipped cream combined to make a slushy-like texture, to which five grams of 24-carat gold is mixed in. The dessert is then garnished with La Madeline au Truffle (flown in from France) and is served with a gold spoon.

Ok, where do I find it?

Serendipity 3 in New York City; the same establishment that brought you the Quintessential Grilled Cheese,

So why not just try both whilst you’re there? Two birds. One stone.

What makes it one of the world’s most expensive drinks?

It costs a cool $25,000 US

I’m not even kidding. Do I buy a new Toyota Corolla or something sweet to finish up my evening meal? #SweetTooth

  1. White Truffle and Gold Pizza

What even is that?

A pizza topped with truffles that have been flown in from Piedmont (Italy), organic water buffalo mozzarella and 24 karat gold leafing.

  1. To’ak Chocolate

What even is that?

A chocolate bar made from rare cacao seeds, sourced in Ecuador, that are fermented, turned into liquid chocolate and finally hand moulded (via 36 intricate steps).

A single, hand selected, shelled cacao bean (measuring between 7-8mm) is placed into the centre of the chocolate bar.

The bar is presented in a custom made box with a pair of wooden tongs that are used to eat the treat.

Ok, where do I find it?

Grown and made in Ecuador, check their website for further details. I believe you can place an order online.

What makes it one of the world’s most expensive eats?

A 42 gram bar will cost you $260.

At the rate I polish off chocolate, a block that size would be gone in one mouthful.

I was lucky enough explore regional Victoria earli I was lucky enough explore regional Victoria earlier in the year (between lockdowns!), and tour the Goldfields with @big4holidayparks – Sure, I got my much-needed fix of the outdoors and was able to feed my insatiable curiosity as I explored the regions utterly fascinating history & culture, but it was sitting up at the old bar of family run Munari wines, just outside of Heathcote that got me.
.
Chatting to the chief winemaker Adrian Munari, and his daughter India (over a lovely red, of course) I heard all about the historic sheep station that was established in 1871, and life on the property today. (I wonder how the farmers endured the pandemic in 1919?)

Here’s to a happy summer holiday for us all, of enjoying those ‘moments’, wherever we are.
