The Road to Freedom (or Why I Love Camping and Caravanning!)

Jen Adams | May 29, 2014 | 10:53 am | 3 Comments

For anyone reading this that also has a love of camping and caravanning, I’m sure fond memories are racing through your mind already. And for anyone that’s never been, I say – give it a try! Australia is set up for so many great adventures, and there’s nothing like hitting the open road with our Jayco and pretty much going anywhere we want.

Having a relaxing picnic lunch

Whether you’re a young family like Clint, myself and our 6 year old daughter Charli, or in fact a “grey nomad” – there’s an adventure for everyone. You can choose a caravan park (like the BIG4 ones we stay in) filled with everything from swimming pools to communal barbecues and jumping pillows – or you can get off the beaten track and stay in some of the most remote places in the country, feeling like you’re only one of a handful of people ever to have been there.

Meeting and greeting the locals on our caravanning trip
Me & Charli meeting and greeting the locals

My love of camping and caravanning started only 5 years ago, when our daughter was 18 months old, and we decided to embark on what we called “the Great Aussie Drive”. We filmed a 13 part series around it, but I have to say it’s what happened off camera that we will just never get over. It was simply remarkable. I remember popping up our Jayco in the Northern Territory and saying to Clint “I just never want this to end.” The sun was setting, we had the barby fired up and everyone was sitting around chatting. As night fell, we all piled inside and the night drifted away over a game of cards inside our cosy little home. For me it’s always the simplest things that put me in that relaxed holiday mood!

Beautiful sunsets abound when you're camping in Australia!

Since that 4-month trip around Australia, we’ve enjoyed countless camping and caravanning adventures ranging from 3 days to 3 weeks. I believe some things just need to be seen from the road – and the comforts of the caravan of course!  It’s quite a different experience flying in and staying in hotels and resorts (they certainly have their place too, but they make for a very different kind of trip).

Don't forget your bathers in case the surf's up!

Whenever we head off in our camper trailer there’s just something so freeing about the experience. We call it our home away from home. We’ve got everything we need, all we really do is grab our bathers and a few clothes and we’re away. And that is exactly what I love. The simplicity of getting away from our everyday lives.

Australian road trip
There are always plenty of laughs shared and great memories made when you’re on a road trip!

We never really know what adventures will unfold…it could be beach cricket, trekking up a mountain, fishing, a boutique winery, an abundance of fresh seafood (prawns anyone?) or just a stroll in a charming town. Wherever the road takes us, one thing that’s for sure, there are always plenty of laughs shared and great memories made!

Beach cricket anyone?

We love sharing our travels with you but we love to hear your stories too! Tell us below what you love about camping and caravanning – where has your best trip been?

I can’t wait to read your comments – Jen x

We agree with your thoughts 100%. We love the freedom of travelling with our Jayco Eagle in tow. We have been on the road full time for over 4 years now as a family and not only have we grown closer as a family, we have experienced and seen lots of great things. We’ve enjoyed simplifying our life and getting back to basics.
The Jayco camper gives us the ability to still go down the backroad or bush track but gives us the comfort of a small kitchen, lounge and our beds are off the ground with enough room for our 3 kids.

Our $1700 “off the floor” converta tent that hubby bolted to his homemade trailer seven years ago has seen us traipse up the east coast of Australia, right up to Fraser Island. We have a few favourite spots: Mungo National Park, Pink Lakes, Little Desert, Bright … the list goes on! We love getting away and I agree Jen that the simple things are the best. Sunsets, relaxing around the campfire, starry nights, barbequing (food always tastes better outside!) and just spending time with family. Can’t think of a better way to relax and enjoy our great country. Places We Go is great, we love your show and your website!

I was lucky enough explore regional Victoria earli I was lucky enough explore regional Victoria earlier in the year (between lockdowns!), and tour the Goldfields with @big4holidayparks – Sure, I got my much-needed fix of the outdoors and was able to feed my insatiable curiosity as I explored the regions utterly fascinating history & culture, but it was sitting up at the old bar of family run Munari wines, just outside of Heathcote that got me.
.
Chatting to the chief winemaker Adrian Munari, and his daughter India (over a lovely red, of course) I heard all about the historic sheep station that was established in 1871, and life on the property today. (I wonder how the farmers endured the pandemic in 1919?)

Here’s to a happy summer holiday for us all, of enjoying those ‘moments’, wherever we are.

Meet James Rainger from @fleetadventures

He not only spends his life taking us travellers on scenic chopper tours over his World-Heritage Listed backyard of the #newengland region – he’s one of the many brilliant pilots who you’ll find hovering above the blazing heat helping fight our Australian Bushfires.

When I shared my nerves about flying, he settled me with in seconds. Super grounded, in safe hands kind-a-feeling, with the biggest sparkle in his eye.

“To be part of the firefighting team is being in the #armidale community - we all live here, our kids go to school here, so we love it. Armidale is a community where we all band together, we’re very passionate about our backyard, and we hope it shows.. and we certainly hope people come and see what it’s like. We’ve got a unique view of part of the world that not many people get to see. And there are not hordes of people here, so it’s very personal, we like to bring people into our world and our life – and share it – thank you for taking the time to come and visit us… “
