Top 5 Cities for Food Lovers

Rachel Davey | December 5, 2015 | 6:33 am | Comment

More so than ever before, holiday destinations we now choose often revolve around food.

We’re more curious about discovering what the locals eat and we plan our travel itineraries around frequent stops at local eateries, restaurants and popular cafes. It seems everyone wants to taste ‘the best’ of what a city has to offer, although that doesn’t mean you need to break the budget.

If you love to indulge in good food on your well-earned break, consider planning your next holiday around one or more of the following cities.

Taipei

This city would have to be the best kept culinary secret in Asia. Who knew that Taiwanese food could be so good? If you know and love Japanese food, you will fall in love with this cuisine too.

One of the best things about this city is the night markets, so much wonderful food to graze on. Street food vendors lining the small streets and alleyways can be found churning out the most delicious eats, available throughout the day.

Restaurants in Taipei are also cozy, the service is impeccable and the prices are very reasonable, considering the quality of food being served.

Rome

A big city with many options of places to eat.

Rome is always a great idea. Indulge in a simple slice of margarita pizza, enjoy a home-made pasta in a small trattoria or treat yourself to a fine authentic dining experience. Not to mention sipping on some of the best wine in the world to match.

Italians cook with passion. The best part about their cooking is that they’re obsessed with using only the freshest and finest seasonal ingredients. It makes total sense to me, and the food actually does taste more authentic.

Hong Kong

If you’ve spoken to anybody that has visited this city, they most probably raved about the food. With good reason, the praise is certainly deserved.

If you decide to take a culinary journey to Hong Kong, be prepared to loosen the belt a few notches before your return. Food is an obsession here, yet it’s easy to see why, once you start exploring the amazing cuisine.

Food is very affordable in Hong Kong, although for serious food connoisseurs, it is very easy to spend several hundred dollars on a single meal, although you can bet it will be something you will remember.

New York

A city that surely offers something to satisfy every taste. Including many Michelin Star gems.

New York is a melting pot of many different cultures. You can see this reflected in the different areas and neighbourhoods.

Visit Greenwich Village to taste the best Italian food outside Italy or stroll through Manhattan’s Chinatown for tasty dim sum or yum cha. The list goes on.

Hanoi

Vietnam’s capital city is a food paradise. Among the chaotic traffic, noisy markets and bustling sidewalks, it’s easy to find street carts, hawker stalls and eateries serving super fresh food at almost any time of the day, all at very affordable prices.

Sit at a tiny corner shop with the locals and enjoy an aromatic bowl of pho, the iconic dish of the country.

Maybe follow your nose to the markets and choose several small plates of tasty snacks being cooked right in front of your eyes.

For serious food lovers, join a food tour  and let a local expert show you the best places to eat.

The bonus of doing a food tour is that you will discover hidden laneways and secret spots that you can re-visit again later.
